Testimonials
I have been a sex worker for 9 years, I never thought I could tell my stories through photography until I became a Sisonke member and was among the 10 who were chosen for a 6-month workshop with the Market Photo Workshop. Today, I am a proud owner of a camera documenting my life and that of others.

Two years ago, I was coming from an event wearing a Sisonke campaign T-shirt. I was detained for 48 hours without being formally charged, on my release I contacted Sisonke and they helped me sue SAPS. Through Sisonke I got a lawyer and got a R***** settlement.

I’m a transgender woman living in the Northern Cape, I have been a sex worker for 11 years. I was using drugs and many offered me drugs instead of money. I went to a few of Sisonke’s creative spaces where I was referred to an organization for counseling and later I was taken to a rehabilitation center. I have been clean for the past 3 years and no longer take drugs in exchange for services.

I am Mme Sekade, an old woman who worked as a security guard, the salary was never enough, and I was always sick from working long hours outside at night. I attended a workshop by Sisonke at one of the sites I was assigned to. It is then that my perception on sex work and sex workers changed, I no longer judge or convince sex workers to leave the trade.
